It’s not too late to get more involved in CUPE 1281 and the broader labour movement! While many positions were filled at the Annual Convention in July, the executive committee is now accepting applications to fill the remaining vacant positions in our local.
To apply, please submit a concise – no more than half-page – statement of interest by filling out this Google Form and uploading the file to the final question by no later than Monday August 18. If you are unable to fill out the form completely, please email your statement to Leila at admin@cupe1281.ca.
Members can only serve on one standing committee, but may be selected to serve on multiple regional councils, if such an interest is stated and if vacancies remain. All current vacancies are listed below and can be viewed in this document. If you can not meet the aforementioned deadline but still want to apply, please send an email to Leila at admin@cupe1281.ca to inquire about the remaining vacancies.
CUPE 1281 Standing Committee Positions
Governance Committee: 3 vacant positions
Responsible for reviewing and recommending modifications or additions to the bylaws and standing policies of the Local and of CUPE and new legislation that impacts the union in general.
Membership Development Committee: 2 vacant positions
Responsible for developing the Local’s membership engagement strategy to improve equity in our workplaces.
Organizing Committee: 1 vacant positions
Responsible for deciding on whether to undertake organizing drives put forth to the committee by the Executive.
Retirees Committee: 4 vacant positions
Responsible for mobilizing retiring and retired members, enhancing institutional memory, engaging in activism and ensuring the participation of retired members for the benefit of the Local.
CUPE 1281 Labour & CUPE Council Delegate Positions
District Labour Councils are chartered bodies of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), representing 3.5 million unionized Canadians. Labour Councils are the voice of working people and represent workers from many affiliated unions in the community. District labour councils meet every month for regular meetings and carry out events and activities between meetings. By participating in labour councils, Local delegates can take on leadership roles as executive members or through committees. - Waterloo Regional Labour Council: 1 vacant delegate position
- St. John’s Labour Council: 1 vacant delegate position
- Kingston & District Labour Council: 1 vacant delegate position
- Windsor & District Labour Council: 1 vacant delegate position
- Peel Regional District Council: 1 vacant delegate position
- Niagara Regional Labour Council: 3 vacant delegate positions
- Durham Region Labour Council: 1 vacant delegate & 2 vacant alternate positions
- Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council: 3 vacant delegate positions
CUPE District Councils are groups of CUPE Locals from a particular region that work together on common issues. Their work includes community projects, political action at the local level, bargaining support and the promotion of strong public services and other CUPE ideals. Chartered through the national union, District Councils are a strong voice for CUPE members in the communities they live and work in.
